Carrying a Soul Cocoon shows you where every other Soul Cocoon on the map is — and shows your position to everyone else carrying one. That two-way trade is the whole mechanic. If you are new, the safe play is to hand one Cocoon to Richie, the in-match merchant, and take the guaranteed reward instead of contesting the altar.
Soul Harvest went live with the 12 August update as the flagship mechanic of Season 1, “Soul Hunt.” It is the newest thing in the game and the part most likely to kill a beginner who wanders into it, so the rules below are worth reading before your first one.
What triggers it and where
- It can trigger during matches in Hallowgrove and Brandrgarde while Soul Harvest is active.
- The higher the map’s Gyldening Intensity, the greater the chance it triggers. The developer states the relationship but has never published the actual probabilities.
- When it triggers, Soul Incubators carrying Soul Cocoons spawn randomly across the map, along with a Fate Altar where the purification prayer happens.
- A new elite monster, the Soulgnawer, actively disrupts the ritual. You have to defeat her to complete it, while watching for third-party players.
The run order
- Decide before you pick anything up. Once you are holding a Soul Cocoon you are broadcasting your position to every other Cocoon holder. There is no version of this where you carry one quietly.
- If you want the safe outcome: find one Cocoon, take it to Richie the in-match merchant, and submit it. One Cocoon to Richie unlocks a special Soul Cocoon reward for your team. This is the developer’s explicitly stated path for players who want guaranteed earnings without being forced into the chaos.
- If you want the altar: you need two Soul Cocoons submitted to the Fate Altar to activate it and begin the ritual — and the altar only accepts them after the match has been underway for a certain duration. That duration is not published. Do not sprint there at match start expecting it to work.
- If the ritual is already running and you did not start it: this is the ambush window the developer designed for. Players who prefer flanking are meant to hunt Cocoon carriers outside the hot zone rather than fight at the altar. The resonance that reveals carriers works for you here too.
- Whatever you chose, extract. None of this pays out if you die on the way home. A player kill has no recovery step at all, so the contested altar is the highest-consequence fight a new player can pick.
The three intended playstyles
The developer named all three in DevNote #8, which is unusually clear about who each part of the mechanic is for:
- Front-line teams rush the ritual sites and contest the rich rewards directly.
- Flankers and ambushers hunt targets outside the hot zones and snatch items at the right moment.
- Casual runs take Cocoons to Richie for guaranteed earnings and never touch the altar.
If you are on your first Soul Harvest, you are the third one. There is no penalty for it and the reward is stated to be guaranteed rather than contested.
Related things that shipped alongside it
The same update wave added the Mistchaser Shop, where you exchange items for Moonlight Nectar and Soul Coins. The developer’s stated purpose is smoothing the progression curve so resource acquisition is reliable rather than luck-dependent — useful if your Soul Harvest attempts keep ending badly. The shop has purchase limits that refresh; a bug where those limits failed to refresh after completing the ritual was fixed on 19 August.
Two more launch-window fixes tell you what to expect if you are playing an older client. Smuggler Woodlings failed to spawn correctly in matches after Soul Harvest began, and the special Soul Incubators spawned during the purification prayer phase incorrectly dropped Soul Cocoons when looted. Both were fixed on 19 August. Also on 19 August: a brief period of invulnerability was added when entering a Mist Lord’s room, which is a meaningful quality-of-life change if your Soul Harvest route passes one.
What is not confirmed
- The trigger probability at any given Gyldening Intensity.
- How long into a match the Fate Altar becomes usable.
- The contents or value of the Richie reward versus the altar reward.
- Whether Soul Harvest persists past Season 1. It is described as the season’s flagship mechanic, tied to the Fate Chart narrative, which implies it is seasonal — but the developer has not said so outright.
Because this mechanic arrived mid-season rather than at launch, it is a good example of how quickly the build is moving. The post-launch update cadence dataset tracks every official update in the first three weeks, Soul Harvest included. And because the altar is a PvP flashpoint where teams meet, the teaming rules in the fair play penalty tracker are worth knowing before you strike a truce with a stranger over a Cocoon.
