Tarkov early wipe: what to prioritise first

Escape from Tarkov Guide 6 min read

Data basis: general early-run strategy, not quest-specific claims. Written 2026-08-16, after the early-August 2026 quest rework. This page names no specific quest or reward. Where that mapping matters, it points at your own task screen instead, for the same reason the season time planner on this site does.

“First 2 days playing Tarkov. What am I doing wrong?” pulled 218 replies on 14 August 2026, and the replies contradict each other almost as often as they agree — because a new player asking that question is usually assumed to have one goal, when actually there are at least four different reasonable goals for an early run, and the correct opening order is different for each.

The four early goals, honestly

  • Just survive to see the map. No progression pressure, purely learning the layouts and extracts. Almost nobody starts here on purpose, but plenty of players should.
  • Task runner. Optimising for quest completion and trader reputation, because that’s what unlocks the gear and stations that make everything else easier.
  • Loot runner. Optimising for cash flow and gear upgrades from raid loot, largely indifferent to quest progress in the early days.
  • Kappa chaser from day one. Playing the entire early wipe as the opening move of a longer Kappa run — see the season time planner once you have a few weeks of data to check yourself against.

Pick your priorities by goal, not by the loudest reply

The rows below are not a gentle spectrum — several of them tell opposite goals to do the opposite thing, on purpose.

Early wipe goal filterThe diagram starts with one early wipe question and splits it into four goals: learning maps, running tasks, farming loot, or chasing a long season goal. Each goal then changes the advice on insurance, avoidable fights, trader focus, and whether raids should be exploratory or task-driven.What are you trying to do?one question, four valid openingsLearn mapssurvive firstRun tasksscreen decidesFarm lootmargin firstLong chasepace first

Just survive / learning mapsYes — cheap gear, insurance return matters more than the fightNo — the point is extraction, not kills, while you learn layoutsNeither — skip trader optimisation entirely for nowExploring. Tasks assume map knowledge you don’t have yet
Task runnerDepends on the task — insure only what a specific task doesn’t consumeOnly when the task requires it — avoidable PvP burns raid time you need elsewhereWhichever trader gates the tasks you’re stuck on, checked on your own screenTasks. Exploring for its own sake is time you’re not spending on the goal
Loot runnerNo on cheap kits — the insurance premium eats the margin you’re trying to buildYes, selectively — a won fight is loot, a lost one is a insured-back kit anywayWhichever trader’s sell prices matter most for what you’re findingNeither strongly — loot running is opportunistic, not scheduled
Kappa chaser from day oneYes, consistently — losing kits without insurance slows the pace this run depends onNo, avoid unnecessary risk — a Kappa run is a marathon and PvP deaths cost raid time you can’t get backTrader progression follows quest requirements, checked against your own remaining countTasks, almost exclusively — this is the one goal where the early-days question basically answers itself

Read the “insure gear” and “take PvP” columns down each row and they flip goal to goal — that is what makes this a decision matrix and not a ranked list with four labels stapled on.

Where the 218-reply thread actually agreed

Underneath the contradictions, most replies converged on one thing: whichever goal you pick, switching goals mid-run every few raids is worse than any single wrong choice above. A task-runner who spends one raid loot-running and the next PvP-hunting is not sampling strategies, they’re diluting all of them.

What this does not cover

It does not tell you which specific quest to run next or what a task currently rewards — the quest rework moved reward sources in ways we have not verified ourselves, which is the same scope cut the season time planner and the modifier post both made. Check your own task screen for that.
