Project Zomboid fertilizer dose: what each use actually does

Project Zomboid Guide 5 min read

The first fertilizer application in a growth phase removes 40 hours from that phase’s remaining growth time (20 hours if the crop has weeds) and adds 10 points of crop health. Every application after that first one, in the same growth phase, does nothing for growth speed or health — instead it takes 25 health points away with each use, and pzwiki’s own cursed-crop list states that a crop becomes cursed once it has been fertilized 3 or more times. Compost behaves differently: extra compost applications add no growth or health, but they never subtract health or curse the crop either. Health runs 0-100, and 0 kills the crop outright, so on a crop that starts around 50 health, three unnecessary extra fertilizer doses on top of the first can be enough to kill it.

What pzwiki’s Agriculture page states, in its own words

  • First use in a phase: “On first use per growth phase, 40 hours of a crop’s current growth phase are removed, 20 hours if the crop has weeds. If less than 40 hours remain in that growth phase, the crop will immediately proceed to its next phase, and any extra hours are lost. Additionally, 10 points are added to a crop’s health.”
  • Every later use, fertilizer only: “Using fertilizer more than once will not speed growth nor add health, but instead remove 25 points of the crop’s health with each subsequent use as well as curse the crop.”
  • Every later use, compost: “Using compost more than once will neither speed growth nor add health, nor will it harm the crop in any way.”
  • Bonus yield: applying fertilizer at growth phase 1, 2 or 3 has a chance to trigger bonus yield, unless the crop is cursed or has weeds — a reason to plan the single useful dose for one of those early phases rather than spending it late.
  • No benefit at all from fertilizer or compost in winter, or once a crop has reached growth phase 6 or 7.

A contradiction this page is not smoothing over

The fertilizing paragraph above says the health penalty and curse effect apply “with each subsequent use” — which reads as starting on the second application. But the same page’s separate “cursed crops” section lists the trigger as: “It’s fertilized with fertilizer 3 or more times.” That puts the curse threshold one application later than the fertilizing paragraph implies. Neither wording is qualified further on the page we read, so this calculator marks a crop cursed starting at the third fertilizer application — matching the explicit “3 or more” list entry — while still applying the 25-point health loss from the second application onward, exactly as the fertilizing paragraph states. The two effects (health loss vs. curse flag) are not necessarily on the same trigger, and pzwiki does not resolve that itself.

Dose outcome calculator

Set the crop’s starting health, whether it has weeds, and how many times you plan to apply fertilizer or compost to a single growth phase. The first application is always the useful one; everything past it either subtracts health (fertilizer) or simply does nothing (compost).

Only the first application per growth phase changes growth time or adds health (pzwiki, Agriculture).

Built from pzwiki's Agriculture page fertilizing rules (checked 2026-09-17, page stamped 42.18.0). One growth phase at a time; hours removed only ever apply on the first application.

Reference table: fertilizer vs. compost over five uses

This is the same math as the calculator above, fixed to a starting health of 50 (roughly the mid-point of pzwiki’s moon-phase range) and no weeds, so the core numbers are visible without running anything.

pzwiki, Agriculture: “On first use per growth phase, 40 hours of a crop’s current growth phase are removed, 20 hours if the crop has weeds… Additionally, 10 points are added to a crop’s health.” And: “Using fertilizer more than once will not speed growth nor add health, but instead remove 25 points of the crop’s health with each subsequent use as well as curse the crop… Using compost more than once will neither speed growth nor add health, nor will it harm the crop in any way.”

The older Fertilizer item page tells a different, simpler story

pzwiki’s Fertilizer item page — stamped for build 42.4.1, well behind the Agriculture page’s 42.18.0 stamp and the current 42.20.4 stable — describes a flatter model: “A single full bag contains four uses which are used with planted crops to increase the speed of growth for that particular plant, it will remove 20 hours from the current growth cycle… Fertilizing a plant 5 times in total will kill it instantly.” That page does not mention a health stat at all, and treats every one of the five uses as removing a flat 20 hours rather than only the first use mattering.

Running the current Agriculture-page numbers on a crop that starts at 50 health gets to a similar death point by a different route: +10 on the first use brings it to 60, then three more fertilizer uses at -25 each cross zero on the fourth application total, not the fifth. The two pages land close to each other on “somewhere around four to five total fertilizer uses ends a crop,” but they do not agree on the number or the mechanism, and this page follows the newer, more detailed Agriculture page rather than averaging the two.

Getting a fertilizer dose right assumes the crop has water and a legal planting window in the first place — a crop drying out or catching disease for unrelated reasons will look like a fertilizer problem if you are not checking those separately. And before any of this matters, the plot needs to exist somewhere you actually control — the outdoor-space criterion in the base scorecard is the same “you need it before day 30” logic applied to picking a base in the first place.
