If eggs are missing, check these in order: (1) is the nest box full or is there no hutch at all — if so, hens lay on the livestock zone floor instead; (2) is the bird actually an adult hen, not a chick or a cockerel; (3) does the zone have a working water source (trough or bucket); (4) is the hutch clean; (5) is a hutch present to protect the flock from the nightly predator event. Each of those is stated directly on pzwiki’s Chicken and Animal pages. If all five check out and eggs are still missing, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming a bug — see the verification record below for what pzwiki still does not state about laying rates.
Correction history: on 5 September 2026 this page withdrew an unverified six-cause list and a blanket “always close the door” recommendation because they were not sourced. This revision restores a direct answer, but only for the causes pzwiki’s own pages state; it does not reintroduce anything that page withdrew.

If you change food, water, hutch location and mods together in the same interval, a later egg does not tell you which change mattered.
