Blacksmithing’s own crafting table only shows skill gates at levels 0, 1, 3 and 4 — level 0 covers basic bar, chunk, block and band forging; level 1 adds coin and precious-metal sheet work; level 3 unlocks piercing an ingot and splitting a steel sheet; level 4 (Simple Forge, one recipe requiring Magazine: Everyday Smithing - April 1993) is the highest level pzwiki’s table documents at all. Every one of those recipes needs a workstation, and the workstation chain — Primitive Forge to Simple Forge to Advanced Forge, each paired with its own furnace tier — is gated by build magazines and materials, not by your Blacksmithing skill level itself: pzwiki’s building-recipe table lists “none” in the Skills column for every forge and furnace construction. Blacksmithing is also a different skill from Welding, despite sharing history: Build 42.12.0 renamed the skill formerly called “Metalworking” to Blacksmithing, and moved the old Metalworking mechanics (barricades, metal structures, car-part repair, disassembling metal furniture) to a newly separate Welding skill.
The name change and why it matters for search results
pzwiki’s Blacksmithing page states directly: “This article is about the Build 42 skill known
briefly as ‘Metalworking’. For the skill known as ‘Metalworking’ in Build 41, see Welding.” Three
different skills have used the “Metalworking” label at different points: Build 42’s early internal
builds, Build 41’s car-repair skill (now Welding), and Blacksmithing itself for a short window
before its own rename. Welding’s own trivia section adds the origin story: a blacksmithRemoved
skill was planned as far back as Build 34, briefly implemented internally with unused
smithing-magazine items and tiles, then “toned down and postponed” — and returned properly as
Blacksmithing in Build 42.
Blacksmithing vs. Welding: two skills, two different jobs
| Blacksmithing | Welding | |
|---|---|---|
| In-game tooltip | “Allows the creation of metal items and objects.” | “Allows the building of crude metal barricades and objects.” |
| Skill ID | Blacksmith | MetalWelding |
| What it makes | Forged tool heads, blades, coins, sheets/bars/ingots, and — per pzwiki’s overview — higher-end plate armor, axes, sledgehammers, swords and maces | Metal barricades on windows/doors, metal structures and containers, car-part repair, disassembling metal world objects (car wrecks, lockers, vending machines, and similar) for scrap |
| Starting-level occupation | Blacksmith (+4) | Welder (+4, also knows the recipes), Mechanic (+1) |
| Skill books | Blacksmithing I-V, “Elementary Forge Practice” through “The Complete Encyclopedia of Metallurgy” | Welding I-V, “Basics of Welding” through “Technological Fundamentals of Metal Fabrication” |
Both skill-book ladders use the same standard multiplier schedule pzwiki’s Skill book page confirms for every profession skill in the game: level 1-2 books give ×3 XP, 3-4 give ×5, 5-6 give ×8, 7-8 give ×12, and 9-10 give ×16.
Every Blacksmithing skill gate pzwiki’s crafting table lists
This is a full transcription of the Skills column from pzwiki’s Blacksmithing “Crafting recipe table” — every row that requires a Blacksmithing level above 0, plus the level-0 rows for context. Workstation names are the ones pzwiki lists; XP is the amount the specific recipe grants.
| Level | Recipe | Materials (core) | Tools | Workstation | XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Forge Small Iron Band / Forge Iron Band | Iron or Steel Bar Quarter + 1 charcoal (small band); Iron or Steel Bar + 4 charcoal (band) | hammer, tongs (crude tongs or tongs) | Primitive Forge | 10 |
| 0 | Forge Bar / Forge Bar From Chunks / Forge Bar Half / Forge Bar Quarter from Chunk | iron/steel chunks, charcoal | hammer/clubhammer, tongs | Primitive Forge | 10 |
| 0 | Forge Block From Chunks | iron/steel chunks ×4, charcoal ×2 | hammer/clubhammer, tongs | Primitive Forge | 10 |
| 0 | Pierce Block / Pierce Chunk | iron/steel block or chunk, charcoal | hammer/clubhammer, tongs, metalworkingpunch | Primitive Forge | 10 |
| 1 | Forge Coins | Gold Sheet or Silver Sheet ×1, charcoal | smithinghammer, metalworkingpliers/tongs | Primitive Forge | 25 |
| 3 | Pierce Ingot | Iron/Steel Ingot ×1, charcoal ×4 | clubhammer, tongs, metalworkingpunch | Primitive Forge | 0 |
| 3 | Split Metal Sheet | Steel Sheet ×1 | ballpeenhammer, tongs, metalworkingchisel | Simple Forge | 0 |
| 4 | Forge Small Steel Sheet / Forge Steel Sheet | Steel Chunk or Steel Block ×1, charcoal | ballpeenhammer, tongs, metalworkingchisel | Simple Forge | 45 |
That last pair (level 4, Simple Forge) is the highest skill gate the Blacksmithing page’s own crafting table documents, and it names a specific magazine requirement: Magazine: Everyday Smithing - April 1993, with an auto-learn threshold at Blacksmithing 6 if you never find the magazine at all. The page’s prose describes far more ambitious late-game output — plate armor, axes, sledgehammers, swords and maces — and lists the magazines that teach those recipes (Armor in the Iron Age, European Armor in the Late Medieval Era, Medieval Armory, American Bladecraft, Armor Schematic, Melee Weapons Schematic, among others), but the table itself does not enumerate those items’ own level requirements — a gap this page flags under Open Questions rather than guesses at.
The workstation chain: what unlocks each forge and furnace
Every forge and furnace tier is a building recipe, not a crafting one, and pzwiki’s Building recipe table lists “none” in the Skills column for every row — meaning the gate on the workstation itself is the magazine and materials, not your Blacksmithing level. Better forges and furnaces “have access to all the recipes that their lesser counterparts have,” per the page’s own Workstations section.
| Workstation | Built from | Magazine required | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primitive Furnace | Clay ×6, Stone ×4, concrete ×1 | Magazine: Iron Age Blacksmithing | Casting recipes (bar/ingot molds) with a Ceramic Crucible |
| Simple Furnace | Stone Block ×40, concrete ×1, masonstrowel | Magazine: Medieval Blacksmithing | Everything Primitive Furnace does, plus iron-tier casting/smelting |
| Advanced Furnace (“Blast Furnace”) | Stone Block ×40, concrete ×1, Large Bellows ×1, masonstrowel | Magazine: Medieval Blacksmithing | Steel-tier casting and smelting |
| Primitive Forge | Stone Anvil ×1, Stone ×10, concrete ×1 | Magazine: Iron Age Blacksmithing | Basic bar/band/chunk forging (level 0-1) |
| Simple Forge | Stone Block ×30, concrete ×1, Blacksmith Anvil ×1, Large Bucket ×1, Log ×1, masonstrowel | Magazine: Modern Blacksmithing at Home | Level 3-4 recipes (pierce ingot, split sheet, steel sheets) |
| Advanced Forge | Same as Simple Forge plus Large Bellows ×1 | Magazine: Modern Blacksmithing at Home | Every Blacksmithing recipe, per pzwiki’s own “pinnacle of blacksmithing” description |
Two components are their own sub-projects rather than a single crafting click. The Large Bellows needs Crude Tanned Medium Leather — skin and behead a medium animal, deflesh and defur the hide, brain-tan it, then dry it on a leather drying rack. The Blacksmith Anvil is cast, not built: mold it in clay on a pottery wheel (gated by Pottery 1 for the crucible recipe), fire the mold and crucibles in a kiln, melt iron in a furnace, then cast the anvil at any furnace tier. Neither step needs a Blacksmithing level — the bottleneck is Pottery and raw material volume, not smithing skill.
Why the table stops at level 4
This isn’t a short skill ceiling — Blacksmithing runs to level 10 like every profession skill, and pzwiki calls it “a very powerful, but very high investment skill” precisely because of what the higher tiers make possible. The gap is in how pzwiki structured the page: its single consolidated crafting table pulls rows tagged as granting or requiring Blacksmithing XP, and those rows top out at level 4. Plate armor, swords, maces and sledgehammers are taught by the magazines named in the Recipe resources section, but their individual level thresholds live outside what this table transcribes — so this page reports the gap in Open Questions rather than guessing a number.
What building the Advanced Forge actually costs, in order
Pulled from pzwiki’s own step-by-step guide for a level-0 start with primitive workstations already available: forge charcoal and get tongs; grind small iron bands at a Primitive Forge (no skill, no tools beyond hammer and tongs, 10 XP each) for early levels; kill two medium animals and process their hides through a softening beam, tannin barrel and drying rack for two Large Bellows (one for forge, one for furnace); in parallel, build a pottery wheel and grind Pottery 1 for the crucible recipe, then mold clay crucibles and a clay anvil mold and fire both in a kiln; melt iron in a furnace using the crucibles and cast the Blacksmith Anvil from the ceramic mold; finally, combine the anvil, bellows and remaining Stone Block/concrete/Log/Large Bucket into a Simple or Advanced Forge — pzwiki’s guide states grinding straight to Advanced is viable once the bellows exist.

The forge and furnace chain above is one instance of Build 42’s broader “read this first” pattern — recipes locked behind a specific magazine rather than a skill number alone, which the general crafting-gate diagnostic covers across every crafting skill, not just Blacksmithing. For a station-by-station reverse lookup of what a specific workstation can make once it’s built, see the workstation recipe index (built for pottery stations; the same reverse-lookup approach applies to forges). Building the Blacksmith Anvil also depends on a second skill entirely — that pottery-crucible dependency is the same Masonry/Pottery overlap the workstation recipe index catalogs for other crafting stations.
