Project Zomboid vehicle repair: what each Laines magazine unlocks

Project Zomboid Guide 9 min read

Before you can work on any vehicle at all, you need to have read the recipe magazine for its class: Laines Standard Auto Manual for standard cars, Laines Commercial Auto Manual for heavy-duty vehicles, or Laines Performance Auto Manual for sport cars — each one teaches a separate recipe (“Basic,” “Intermediate,” or “Advanced Mechanics”) and none of them substitute for another. Pick the Mechanic occupation and you start knowing all three; pick the Amateur Mechanic trait and you start knowing Basic and Intermediate, but still need to find and read the Performance manual before touching a sports car. Past that gate, every individual part — tires, brakes, the engine, doors — has its own tool requirement and Mechanics level threshold, laid out in full below from pzwiki’s Mechanics page. A separate, easy-to-miss detail: siphoning gas from a car’s tank is documented by two different pzwiki sources as requiring a Rubber Hose, even though the Vehicle page’s own refueling section only mentions needing an empty gas can — a contradiction this page flags rather than resolves.

The three-magazine gate

The magazine system is separate from — and easy to confuse with — the numbered Mechanics I-V skill books, one of which happens to share the “Laine” name. pzwiki’s Mechanics page lists both, and the naming overlap is real: skill book III is literally titled Laine’s Repair Manual ‘93, distinct from the three recipe magazines below that also carry the Laines brand.

Laines Commercial Auto ManualWorking on heavy-duty vehicles (Intermediate Mechanics recipe)Mechanic occupation, Amateur Mechanic trait
Laines Performance Auto ManualWorking on sport vehicles (Advanced Mechanics recipe)Mechanic occupation only

Each magazine’s own item page confirms the recipe it teaches: Laines Standard Auto Manual teaches “Basic Mechanics,” and states that choosing the Amateur Mechanic trait at character creation “will only teach basic and intermediate mechanics” — meaning that trait still leaves the Performance manual as something you have to find and read separately if you want to work on sport-class cars.

The five numbered skill books are a different system entirely — they multiply Mechanics XP gain rather than unlocking anything, and use the game’s standard schedule: Mechanics I “Carzone’s Repair Guide” (levels 1-2, ×3), II “How Vehicle Engines Work” (3-4, ×5), III “Laine’s Repair Manual ‘93” (5-6, ×8), IV “Long Term Vehicle Maintenance” (7-8, ×12), V “Mastering Automotive Fault Diagnosis Techniques” (9-10, ×16), confirmed against pzwiki’s Skill book page entries for Mechanics.

Every part, by tool and Mechanics level

These are the removable parts from pzwiki’s Mechanics table, current as of the page’s own 42.18.0 stamp (current stable is 42.20.4). Two rows on that page are left out here because they cannot be uninstalled: the Lightbar (Mechanics 4, screwdriver) and the Trunk (welding torch and steel sheet, Welding 3, Mechanics 2). “Recommended mechanics level” splits by vehicle class where the requirement differs.

Two notes pzwiki states directly: brakes and suspension both need the tire uninstalled first, and engines can’t be swapped outright — salvaging one for spare parts sets the donor’s condition to zero regardless of how many parts you took, and repairing a receiving engine consumes every spare part in your inventory at once, with no way to hold some back.

Spare engine parts get more efficient at higher Mechanics levels

Salvaging and repairing engines is gated separately by vehicle class — level 4 for standard, 5 for heavy-duty, 6 for sport — and above that floor, the average condition gained per spare part climbs with your Mechanics level:

Mechanics levelStandardHeavy-DutySport
41%n/an/a
51%1%n/a
62%1%1%
72%2%1%
83%2%2%
93%3%2%
104%3%3%

At level 4 on a standard vehicle you get roughly a quarter of the condition per part that a level-10 mechanic gets — a reason to bank spare parts rather than spend them the moment engine repair unlocks.

The rubber hose contradiction

Three pzwiki sources touch on siphoning gas, and they don’t fully agree. The Tool category page tags Rubber Hose with the action “Siphon Gas,” and the Rubber Hose item page itself states it “can be used to siphon gasoline from cars.” The game’s own Quick tips — loading-screen tips added with Build 42.13.0 — state directly: “You need a hose and an appropriate container to siphon gas from cars.” But the Vehicle page’s own Refueling section describes the same action differently: “the option to siphon gas is available if the player has an empty gas can,” with no hose mentioned, and a text search of that page turns up zero matches for “Rubber Hose.” We found no pzwiki changelog documenting this as a Build 41-to-42 change, so this page does not claim the hose requirement is new to Build 42 — only that it is the current tip text and tool tagging, and that the Vehicle page’s own prose has not caught up to either.

The hose rule and the timeline gap this page won’t invent

  • Whether the hose requirement for siphoning changed between Build 41 and Build 42. No patch note or version-history page we found states this directly; we treat it as current behavior (per the Quick tips text and Tool tagging) without a “this changed” claim.
  • Why the Vehicle page’s Refueling section omits the hose requirement the Quick tips page states — whether that’s an outdated omission (the page is stamped 42.16.0, one build stamp behind Quick tips’ 42.13.0 despite being numerically later) or a genuine mechanic difference between siphoning via the vehicle radial menu versus another method, pzwiki does not say.
  • An exact real-time cost for reading each Laines magazine — pzwiki documents what each magazine teaches, not how long reading it takes; see the general skill-book reading-time table on pzwiki’s Skill book page if you need that separately.

The three-magazine gate above is a vehicle-specific instance of a wider pattern — Build 42 hides several recipes behind a “read this first” requirement before a skill level matters at all, which the general crafting-gate diagnostic covers for recipes outside vehicles. And if you’re deciding whether Mechanic or Amateur Mechanic is worth the trait points at character creation in the first place, the occupation point-cost index lists exactly what each one starts you with.
