If the crafting menu greys a recipe with “requires a surface,” that message is not naming a specific missing object. Build 42 sorts recipes into three tiers: some craft straight from your inventory with nothing nearby, some just need a flat, table-like tile in reach — a table, counter or similar furniture flagged as a work surface — and only the third tier, a named workstation such as a pottery wheel or a lit forge, needs the exact object the tooltip would show if it were missing instead. “Requires a surface” is that middle tier: stand next to almost any flat piece of furniture and the check clears, no specific item required.
That message is one symptom of a larger failure mode Build 42 introduced. In Build 41, a recipe you could not make was usually a recipe you did not have the parts for, and the menu told you which parts. In Build 42 there are five independent gates, four of them are silent, and two of them do not grey the recipe out — they remove it from the list entirely. So the honest first question is not what am I missing, it is which kind of missing is this.
Project Zomboid Build 42 crafting gates, at a glance
| Situation | Diagnosis | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Pottery recipe missing entirely on a Build 41 save | Wrong build — the recipe is not in your game | Stop searching the menu. Check your Steam beta branch instead — the recipe is not in this build. |
| Recipe never shows up, magazine unread | 1 gate blocking: recipe known | Read the relevant magazine or schematic first — an unlearned recipe is simply absent, not greyed. |
| Recipe greyed out, clay sitting in the next room | 1 gate blocking: materials in reach | Move the material into an adjacent container or your own bags — the menu does not count your whole base. |
This is this site's structural model of the five crafting gates, not a recipe database — it narrows down which gate is stopping you. Specific level requirements are shown in-game on the greyed entry.
The five gates, in the order the game applies them
Scope note: the diagnostic below is an editorial checklist. It does not execute the game’s recipe code, and the five categories are not claimed to be the complete internal evaluation order for every Build 42 recipe. Record the exact build, recipe name and tooltip before following it; mods and later patches can add different gates.
Which gate is blocking this recipe?
Nothing definitely blocking — 3 unverified
Verify recipe known first: Open the crafting menu and search the item name with no filters. If nothing comes back at all, this is a knowledge gate, not a material gate. If it comes back greyed out, it is one of the gates below.
- OKBuildBuild 42. All five gates below are live.
- OKMaterials in reachIn your bags or in an adjacent container — this gate is satisfied.
- CHECKRecipe knownOpen the crafting menu and search the item name with no filters. If nothing comes back at all, this is a knowledge gate, not a material gate. If it comes back greyed out, it is one of the gates below.
- CHECKSkill levelHover the greyed entry. The requirement line names the skill and the level; compare it against your character sheet rather than guessing from the item tier.
- CHECKStation or toolCheck for a pottery wheel for shaping, and a kiln for firing — two separate stations. A part-built or unlit station reads as absent.
Structural diagnostic, not a recipe database: it narrows down which of the five gates is stopping you. Specific level requirements are shown in-game on the greyed entry.
Set the six fields to your actual situation and the panel names the gate. The URL updates as you go, so a state you cannot solve can be pasted straight into a thread instead of retyped as prose — which is usually where these questions lose the detail that would have answered them.
Why the recipe being absent is the confusing case
The two knowledge gates — build and recipe learned — behave differently from the other three, and the difference is the whole source of the frustration:
- Absent from the list. The game is telling you the recipe is not available to this character at all. Either the content is not in your build, or you have not read the thing that teaches it. There is nothing to hover, so there is no error message to read.
- Present but greyed. The game is telling you the recipe exists and you know it, but a condition fails. Hover it and the requirement line is right there.
A player who has never seen the second state assumes the first is a bug, searches for the item name, finds a wiki page that says it is craftable, and concludes the game is broken. It is not broken; the search simply skipped the question of whether the recipe was ever in the list.
Where Build 41 and Build 42 give opposite instructions
This is the row that matters if you are reading an older guide, or playing on a server that has not moved branches yet.
| You are trying to make | On Build 41, do this | On Build 42, do this |
|---|---|---|
| Pottery: bowls, jars, kiln goods | Stop looking — the tree is not in this build | Find clay, then a wheel, then a kiln |
| Smithing: forged tools and parts | Stop looking — not in this build | Get the forge lit before you open the menu |
| Knapping: stone tools from flint | Stop looking — not in this build | Works out of your inventory, no station |
| Carpentry: furniture and walls | Check materials in reach | Check materials in reach, plus a workbench for the larger pieces |
| Tailoring: padding and repairs | Check thread and needle | Check thread and needle |
The first three rows point in genuinely opposite directions: on one build the correct action is to stop searching and change branch, and on the other it is a normal in-game errand. The last two rows point the same way on both builds, which is precisely why nobody asks about them.
The gate people underestimate: materials in reach
The crafting menu counts your inventory plus containers in the squares immediately around you. It does not count your base. A player standing in a workshop with a crate of clay in the next room reads a material count of zero and, reasonably enough, concludes the clay is the wrong kind of clay.
Two habits remove this failure permanently:
- Keep a single crafting crate adjacent to the station, not a tidy storage room down the corridor. Tidy bases produce this bug constantly.
- When the count looks wrong, drop everything into your own inventory and re-open the menu before investigating anything else. It takes seconds and it eliminates the most common cause outright.
What to do when all five gates report clear
If the diagnostic above comes back with nothing blocking and the recipe still refuses, the remaining candidates are narrow:
- A tool in the wrong variant or condition. Some recipes want a specific tool, not a category, and a badly damaged one can drop out of eligibility.
- A mod overriding the recipe. Mods that touch crafting are the usual reason a recipe behaves differently from every guide you can find. Test in a fresh unmodded sandbox before reporting a bug.
- A stale multiplayer client. Reconnect. Client-side recipe state after a server update is a real and unglamorous cause.
None of those are worth investigating before the five gates are clear, which is the entire argument for working the list in order rather than guessing.
