Project Zomboid B42: what each pottery station can actually make

Project Zomboid Guide 12 min read

You have built the thing. Twenty units of clay went into a kiln, or a Stone Wheel you spent a Masonry level earning went into a pottery wheel, and now you are standing in front of it with a menu that shows you fewer entries than you expected. The question everyone actually asks at this point is not “how do I make a bowl”. It is what is the full set of things this station can ever produce, and which of those are behind a magazine I will never find by grinding.

That is a different question from the one most guides answer. “How to make X” is a forward lookup. This is the reverse: you own a fixed set of stations and a fixed set of books, and you want the whole reachable set enumerated. Below is that enumeration, taken from the recipe tables on pzwiki for the 42.20 branch, with the version staleness of each source page called out where it matters.

The short answer first, because it is genuinely good news

Not one recipe on the pottery wheel, the pottery bench, either kiln, or the grindstone is locked behind a magazine. Every entry in the tables below is gated by skill level, by nothing at all, or by an optional research shortcut. The magazine wall in Build 42 exists — it is real and it is brutal — but it sits one step downstream of pottery, in glassmaking, and it affects exactly one recipe with no alternative path at all. Details in the last section.

So if your pottery wheel menu is short, the cause is a skill number, not a missing book.

Building the four stations

This is the part that trips people, because the gate on two of these stations is not a Pottery level — it is Masonry.

Advanced KilnClay ×20mason’s trowel (degrades)none listednone

GrindstonePlank ×4, Nails ×4, Stone Wheel ×1hammernone listednone
Stone Wheel (a part, not a station)Large Stone ×1hammer or club hammer + crude or mason’s chiselMasonry 2none (also researchable from a found Stone Wheel)

Two consequences fall straight out of that table. First, the pottery wheel and the grindstone compete for the same scarce component, and a Stone Wheel weighs 20 — you are not carrying several home in one trip. Second, the real prerequisite for owning a pottery wheel is Masonry 2, a skill most players are not levelling while they think about pottery at all.

The kilns, by contrast, cost only clay and a trowel, which is why almost everyone ends up with a kiln before they have anything to fire in it. If clay volume is your binding constraint rather than skill, the clay trip planner turns a target like “20 clay for a kiln plus 5 for a pot” into an actual number of trips.

Uncertain: several community guides state that the Advanced Kiln requires Pottery 3 to build. The pzwiki building recipe shows no skill requirement — but that page carries a stamp for 42.13.2 against a 42.20.2 stable, so it may simply be stale. We could not confirm the Pottery 3 figure against a primary source and are not asserting it.

Pottery Wheel — the complete list

Every one of these has no magazine requirement. The unlock column is what gets it into your menu.

Sculpt JarClay ×3, Water 250 mLPottery 5skill, or research a Clay Jar (Unfired)40

Read the XP column as the answer to “which of these should I spam”. Clay is the expensive input, not time, so the figure that matters is XP per clay: the mug and the pipe segment return 15 XP for one clay, the pot returns 15 for five. Sculpting pots to level up costs five times the clay per XP that sculpting mugs does. Nothing in the game tells you this.

The jar at Pottery 5 is the only pottery wheel recipe you will wait a meaningful time for. Note the research alternative in its row: if you find an unfired clay jar in the world, you can learn it without the level.

Pottery Bench — not the same station

Three recipes live on the bench rather than the wheel, which is the single most common reason a player thinks a recipe is missing when it is not. No magazines here either.

A separate Hand Press station covers the pressed goods — Clay Brick, Clay Tile, Clay Shingle, Bar Mold, Ingot Mold (5 XP each) and the Blacksmith Anvil Mold from Clay ×8 (20 XP). Bricks and tiles can also be pressed by hand on any crafting surface at the same 5 XP, so the Hand Press is a convenience for those two rather than a gate.

Kilns — which one, and the two exclusives

Firing recipes are unusual: every one of them requires no skill, no magazine, and grants zero XP. A kiln never levels you. What separates the two kilns is batch size and two exclusive recipes pointing in opposite directions.

Each firing consumes a fire starter, a log and charcoal regardless of batch size, which is the whole argument for the advanced kiln: the fuel bill per brick halves. The anvil mold exclusivity is the one that actually blocks progression — if your plan runs through blacksmithing, you need the advanced kiln specifically, and no amount of Pottery skill substitutes.

Advanced Kiln output per firing Project Zomboid B42, 42.20.2 stable — pzwiki kiln tables Bricks 6 (Primitive: 3) Ceramic tiles 8 (Primitive: 4) Quicklime 4 (Primitive: 2) Advanced Kiln doubles every batch size over the Primitive Kiln; fuel cost per firing is the same either way.

Uncertain: pzwiki’s Primitive Kiln page states the advanced kiln fires “most of the same items”, and the Advanced Kiln page lists the single-item recipes without restating their station. We have not been able to confirm from a primary source that the advanced kiln can fire every single-item recipe. The two exclusives above are stated explicitly on the wiki; treat the rest of the overlap as very likely but unconfirmed. Similarly, a Clay Plate (Unfired) appears in the kiln firing lists, but the Pottery skill page — stamped for 42.18.0 — shows no sculpt recipe producing one. Either it was added after that page was last checked or it comes from elsewhere; we could not verify which.

Grindstone — one recipe. That is the whole list.

RecipeInputSkill neededUnlock pathXP
Sharpen Blade with Grindstoneany item with the sharpenable tagopen from level 0Maintenance 5

That is genuinely it. If you built a grindstone expecting a crafting station and found one menu entry, nothing is broken and no magazine is hiding anything. The sharpenable tag is very broad — axe and hatchet heads, every knife blade, machete and sword blades, scythes, shears, scissors, spearheads, straight razors and the assembled weapons made from them — so the station is useful, it just does exactly one thing. The related Crude Whetstone recipe that people conflate with it is a blacksmithing item and is not made at the grindstone.

The magazine wall is downstream, in glassmaking

Here is where the fear in the original question is justified — just not for pottery. Your crucibles feed glassmaking, and glassmaking is where Build 42 puts real books. The pattern is a three-way OR: a magazine, or an auto-learn level, or researching an existing item.

Scan the top row. Make Glass Pane is the one recipe in this whole chain that grinding cannot reach: no auto-learn level, no research path, magazine or nothing. Every other row on the page has at least two ways in, and for most of them the cheapest is research — a drinking glass is lying on a kitchen shelf in every house in Knox County, and researching one skips a magazine hunt entirely.

That asymmetry is the practical takeaway. When a Build 42 recipe is missing, “which magazine?” is usually the wrong first question; “is there a research path?” is the right one. If you are staring at a specific greyed-out or absent entry rather than enumerating a station, the five-gate diagnostic walks the gates in the order that costs least to check.

Which version this is, and what that costs you

42.20.2 stable. The pzwiki pages these tables come from carry their own version stamps and they are not all current: the Pottery skill page is stamped 42.18.0, both kiln pages 42.13.2, the Pottery Wheel page 42.12.3 and the Stone Wheel page 42.10.0, all against 42.20.2 stable.

That is not a reason to distrust the structure — the shape of the system (skill gate, optional research, magazine as one of several OR’d paths) has been stable across those builds. It is a reason to distrust any single number if your game disagrees with it, and it is why the two things we could not confirm are marked above rather than rounded off into confident prose. If your Advanced Kiln asks for Pottery 3, the wiki is stale and your game is right.

Anyone tracking Build 42’s habit of quietly invalidating old advice will find the same failure mode in why the game refuses a recipe you appear to qualify for. It shows up outside crafting menus too — wiki-quoted butchering yields are the same kind of number that goes stale between builds without anyone flagging it, which is why that page has you log your own instead of trusting a table.
