Project Zomboid: where to actually look for a generator

Project Zomboid Guide 6 min read

“Tips on finding a generator in remade Rosewood?” is a question with an answer that used to exist and does not anymore. The old spawn lists — the ones with a building name and a room description — were built against the previous version of the map, and the remake moved or replaced enough of those buildings that the lists are now actively misleading rather than just outdated. Nobody outside the development team has walked the new map systematically enough to publish new coordinates yet, us included, and we are not going to fake having done that. Once you actually have one running, how long you can put off finding a second is its own question — sandbox shutoff settings are counted in hours, not days, which changes how urgent this search is.

What survives a remake and what does not

A specific building’s contents do not survive a remake. The category of building the game’s loot tables favor for a given item generally does. That is the gap this table works: not “the generator behind the counter at 3 Main Street,” but which kind of building is worth walking to before which other kind, based on the loot categories those building types draw from — a relationship the remake does not reset even when it moves the buildings themselves around.

What a remake changes versus what it leaves aloneTwo parallel tracks. The top track, a specific building’s contents, is broken by a map remake, shown as a line cut in the middle. The bottom track, a building category’s loot concentration, passes through the remake unbroken, shown as a continuous line.Specific building’s contentsbroken by remakeBuilding category’s loot concentrationsurvives remakeremake
A coordinate list breaks at the remake line. A category ranking does not — which is the axis this search order is built on.

Search order, by building category

This is ranked by how concentrated the relevant loot category appears to be for that building type, based on repeated player reports rather than guesswork about specific addresses. We have not seen the underlying loot tables published or confirmed by the developer, so treat the ranking below as an observation worth testing against your own searches, not a guaranteed drop rate — the axis is deliberately one a map remake cannot break, even if the exact ordering shifts.

Building categoryWhy it ranks hereWhat else you’ll find thereSkip if…
Warehouses / storage unitsHeavy-equipment loot tables concentrate here more than in any residential categoryTool crates, construction suppliesYou’re already generator-equipped and hunting fuel instead
Construction / industrial sitesSecond-highest concentration; often has multiple units on one siteNails, propane torches, sheet metalThe site has been visibly picked clean already
Gas stationsReliable for a fuel generator specifically, less so for the unit itselfPropane, fuel canistersYou need the unit itself, not just fuel for one you have
Farms with outbuildingsRural properties often carry a generator as basic infrastructure, not lootFarming tools, fuel storageYou’re in a dense town centre with no rural access
Residential garages/shedsLowest concentration but highest volume — worth it only in bulkGeneral tool lootYou have time for only a handful of stops

The farm row and the warehouse row give genuinely different advice depending on your situation: in a dense town start, warehouses and construction sites are worth a special trip even if they are further away, because the concentration is high enough to justify the walk. In a rural or farm-adjacent start, that special trip is a waste of time you do not need to take — a nearby farm’s outbuildings clear the same need locally, at a fraction of the travel cost. Applying the town-start advice to a rural start sends you walking past a generator to go find one.

Searching a room once you’re there

Two habits shorten every stop on this list regardless of building type:

  • Check attached sheds and lean-tos before the main structure. Utility equipment gets placed in the small attached structure disproportionately often, and it is also the fastest room to clear, so checking it first costs almost nothing if it’s empty.
  • Don’t clear a building you can already see is contested. A generator you die retrieving is a net loss regardless of how good the spawn odds were.

What we are not claiming

We have not surveyed the current Rosewood remake room-by-room, and anyone telling you they have a complete coordinate list this soon after a remake should be treated with the same skepticism we are asking you to treat the old, now-wrong lists with. This table is deliberately built at the level that survives a remake instead of expiring with one.

This is the same discipline we tried to apply to the wider question of which Build 41 habits are even worth keeping after the Build 42 rework — see the index of what Build 41 knowledge expired for the areas we could confirm against an official source and, just as importantly, the ones we couldn’t and left out rather than guess at.

Sources

  • Generator spawn — Steam Community discussions — a February 2025 Build 42 thread where a player finds zero generators in a Rosewood save despite checking garages and basements, and community replies point at map location rather than a fixed spawn table — friction evidence, not a source for the search-priority ranking itself.
  • Upcoming Features: B42 — Project Zomboid official blog — confirms the scope of the Build 42 map and systems rework that underlies why old coordinate-based generator guides went stale.
