Which Project Zomboid Build 41 knowledge expired in Build 42

Project Zomboid Guide 7 min read

Build 42 did not simply add content. It changed what several answers you already knew were worth. The awkward part is that nothing tells you which of your Build 41 habits went stale, so people keep applying Build 41 reasoning, get a result that makes no sense, and conclude something is broken.

We went back to The Indie Stone’s own Build 42.20 feature overview and the dated Steam patch notes rather than trusting memory or forum chatter. Every row below is something we can point at in an official post. Where we could not confirm a change against an official source — fracture and splint timing, specific generator spawn tables, corpse-sickness exposure rates — we left it out rather than guess. That cut the original list roughly in half; a shorter, checkable index is worth more than a longer one that quietly includes numbers nobody can verify.

How this index was built

Each row is anchored to at least one dated official source: The Indie Stone’s Build 42.20 feature overview, or a specific Steam patch-note post (linked under Sources, with the in-game version and date attached). This tells you what The Indie Stone shipped and said, which is a narrower claim than “what the community reports” — but it’s one we can actually stand behind.

How Build 41 knowledge decays in Build 42 Three bands: still true underneath a new name, changed mechanically, and never existed before so there is no old answer at all. Same mechanic, new name Mechanically changed Brand new reuse the logic re-learn the numbers no old answer exists Confirmed against official patch notes only The middle band is the one that bites: the interaction still exists, so it still "feels" familiar. The right band only feels like a bug because the recipe or material is absent rather than greyed out.
Three confirmed decay bands. Everything else in the original Build 41 mental model is currently unverified, not disproven.

The index

Crafting menuMechanically changedRecipes are now searchable by input or output item, inputs are selectable rather than fixed, and multiple items can be queued in one craftOfficial Build 42.20 feature overview
New craft skillsBrand newMasonry, Carving, Knapping and Blacksmithing are new crafting skills with no Build 41 equivalent — there is no old Build 41 answer to reuseOfficial Build 42.20 feature overview
WeldingSame mechanic, new nameThe skill you knew as “Metalworking” in Build 41 text strings is the same underlying skill, renamed “Welding” during Build 42 developmentBuild 42.16.0 patch notes (fixed strings still referring to it as Metalworking/Metalwork)
Animal husbandry & butcheringBrand newLivestock, the butcher hook, and animal-product yields are new Build 42 systems; Build 41 has no comparable livestock-handling mechanic to carry overOfficial Build 42.20 feature overview
Butcher hook yieldMechanically changed within Build 42The amount of meat cuts gained from large animals via the butcher hook was itself increased in the 42.20.0 stable balance pass — so even a Build 42 number from earlier in development can be staleBuild 42.20.0 Stable Released patch notes (BALANCE section)
Clay and masonry materialsBrand newClay, clay/stone walls, and the sand-dirt-clay sourcing balance are Build 42 additions; there was no clay material loop in Build 41Official Build 42.20 feature overview; Build 42.20.0 patch notes (sandbox biome balance)
Existing town layoutsMechanically changedRiverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron and Dixie were rebuilt with unique buildings and consistent per-town landscaping — a Build 41 memory of what’s on a specific street is not reliable in those towns anymoreOfficial Build 42.20 feature overview
Dedicated server administrationMechanically changedInventory handling and all TimedActions were moved server-side, and a full anti-cheat suite was added — server-side load and behaviour is not the same as Build 41 even with matching settingsOfficial Build 42.20 feature overview

The band that causes the most confusion

Mechanically changed is the expensive one, not because it is hidden but because the interaction still looks the same. You still open the crafting menu, you still hook a deer, you still walk into Rosewood expecting the same three houses on the same corner. The town rebuild is the clearest case: the overview does not say “some buildings changed,” it says every building in those towns is now unique with deliberate per-town landscaping, so a route memorized in Build 41 is a guess now, not a shortcut.

Brand new systems are less dangerous once you know they’re new — you’re not fighting a wrong memory, you’re building a first one. Masonry, Knapping, Carving and Blacksmithing, and the clay material chain that comes with them, are exactly this: nothing in Build 41 tells you anything useful about them, so the honest move is to treat the recipe gates page as your starting point rather than searching for a Build 41 shortcut that was never there.

What we deliberately left out

Three things we could not confirm against an official source, and rather than hedge them into the table with a soft qualifier, we cut them:

  • Fracture and splint healing time. No official patch note we found documents a change (or a non-change) here between builds. If you need current numbers, use a page that measures them directly rather than one that assumes Build 41 timing still applies.
  • Corpse-sickness exposure rates. Corpse handling received real bug fixes in Build 42.20 (dragging, burying, remote-player desync), but we found no official source quantifying how exposure risk changed, so we are not going to assert a mechanism we can’t point at.
  • Generator spawn locations specifically. The town rebuild is confirmed and real (see the table above), but we found no official source breaking that down by loot category, so we are not going to imply a generator-specific claim the town-rebuild source doesn’t make.

Each of those needs direct measurement rather than a patch-note citation, which is a different kind of work and gets its own page when it’s done.
