X4 late game: what to do when you're stuck

X4: Foundations Guide 4 min read

Nothing below claims a specific credit total, ship count, or sector name as the “right” number for anyone — those are yours to check against your own save.

“Ok, what now (late game noob)?” asked one player on 9 August 2026, describing a fleet of Tokyos filled with Syns and Osakas, more factories in the pipe, and no clear next move. A separate thread from a different player, further back, described finishing the main Terran plotline and being “mentally stuck on how to proceed” despite having the resources to do almost anything. Both threads describe the same surface symptom — “I have stuff, I don’t know what to do with it” — but they are not the same problem, and the generic replies to both (“build more,” “explore more,” “fight more”) mostly missed that.

Find your stage

Answer honestly against your own current save, not against where you’d like to be.

StageWhat it looks like on your own saveWhat actually moves you forwardWhat does not
Capital fleet built, no target for itYou have capitals fully crewed and stationed, factories still expanding, but no faction you’re actively pushing againstPick one faction relationship deliberately — ally or rival — and commit fleet and diplomacy to that choice instead of staying neutral with everyoneBuilding another capital ship — it does not create a target, it just makes the idle fleet bigger
Main plot cleared, side plots avoidedYou finished a faction’s main story chain and the follow-up side missions (Segaris Pioneers, Hatikvah League, etc.) look like a slog you’ve been putting offPick up one side plot chain deliberately rather than none — several exist specifically to give post-main-plot players a next objectiveWaiting for a new “main” objective to appear — post-plot progression in X4 is mostly side-plot and economy, not another main chain
Automation-stalledShips assigned to roles that quietly stopped doing anything, and you haven’t noticed because the fleet still looks busy on the mapRun each idle-looking ship through a configuration checklist before assuming it’s a plot or balance issue — see the idle ship triage checklistReassigning the whole fleet at once — it hides which specific ship or setting was wrong

Why “build more” keeps missing

A fully crewed Tokyo doesn’t need a bigger fleet, it needs a fight to be in or a faction to serve. A player who finished the Terran plotline doesn’t need more credits, they need to know the Segaris Pioneers and Hatikvah League chains exist and pick one. Neither problem is solved by the generic advice, because the generic advice assumes you’re short on resources when you’re actually short on a decision.

If you land on “automation-stalled”

That stage has its own dedicated tool rather than a table row, because the causes are configuration-specific and need a yes/no walkthrough, not a paragraph: the idle ship triage checklist confirms each possible cause against your own save before naming one.

If your fleet itself is the bottleneck

Both of the first two stages can also show up as a fleet that’s big but poorly organized rather than genuinely idle — see traders, miners, or subordinates first for the decision matrix on which logistics setup fits which situation, and how big a fleet to kill a Xenon station if the target you’ve picked is a Xenon build-up rather than a rival faction.

What this deliberately leaves out

This isn’t a ranked list of “progression stages” — a save can be automation-stalled and faction-neutral at the same time, and X4 doesn’t force a linear order on any of it. Fix whichever one is cheaper to check first; automation is usually cheapest, because it’s a checklist rather than a commitment to a faction or a plot chain.
