Project Zomboid welding grind calculator

Guide 5 min read

“How the hell do I grind the welding skill???” is not a one-off complaint — the same question, worded almost the same way, comes back every few days. The replies are consistent too: weld scrap, weld frames, weld whatever you can afford. That answer is correct and also useless, because it never tells you the one thing that actually determines whether your plan is reasonable: how much worse each level gets than the one before it.

Project Zomboid welding grind, at a glance

Situation Estimated actions What to do about it
Fresh character, grinding 0 to 3 69 actions (~0.08 h) This stretch is close to linear — do not over-plan a short early grind.
Grinding all the way from 0 to 9 890 actions (~0.99 h) Front-load this early in a run — the late levels alone dominate the total actions.
Already at 7, pushing the last two levels to 9 478 actions (~0.53 h) This is the steepest stretch in the curve — plan for scrap availability, not just time.

These are outputs of this site's modelled action-count curve, not values extracted from the game files — Project Zomboid does not publish an exact XP table. Use the calculator below with your own observed seconds-per-weld and scrap use.

Cost per level is not flatA row of rising bars represents welding levels from low to high. Each bar is taller than the last by a growing margin, showing that the actions required to clear one level increase faster than the level number itself, rather than staying constant.low levelhigh levelactionsneeded
The gap between levels widens as you climb — the same “one more level” costs far more near the top than near the bottom.

Most of this grind is the last one or two levels, not the first ones — level 4→5 alone accounts for the largest single share of the actions above (modelled, not measured).

Model output, not extracted XP data. The action-count curve is this site's modelled shape; time and material totals come from the numbers you enter for your own weld speed and scrap use.

Time your own next ten welds with a phone timer and note the scrap it cost you — that’s the two numbers this needs. Everything it outputs is an estimate built on a modelled curve, not a value pulled from the game’s files, and it says so on every update.

Why the curve matters more than the total

Welding is reported, consistently, as a skill that starts cheap and gets expensive fast. Nobody compiles how fast, so every grind plan treats level 3→4 and level 8→9 as roughly the same amount of work. They are not close.

What the model claims Why it’s shaped this way
Actions needed grow roughly ×1.35 per level Matches the ordering threads describe — early levels feel quick, the run from 7 to 9 is where people quit
No absolute XP-per-action value published Project Zomboid doesn’t expose one we can verify, and republishing a guessed constant as fact is exactly the failure mode this site avoids
Your seconds-per-weld and scrap-per-weld are yours, not ours Those numbers depend on your character’s stats, your recipe choice, and your current game speed — nothing we could hardcode would be right for your save

Read the model as a claim about ratios between levels, the same way the site’s fracture calculator is a claim about ratios between choices, not about literal day counts.

What follows from that

  • Front-load your welding sessions early in a run. The early levels are cheap in this model; putting them off means paying the expensive rate for skill you could have banked for free.
  • A short target (one or two levels) barely needs planning. The curve only bites once you’re chasing three or more levels in a sitting — that’s when the steepest single level starts dominating the total.
  • “Weld anything” is fine advice for levels 0–3 and bad advice for levels 7–9. At the high end, what you weld should be chosen for scrap efficiency, because the action count per level is high enough that material cost, not time, becomes the binding constraint for most players.

What this doesn’t tell you

It doesn’t tell you the exact XP value of a scrap-metal weld versus a frame weld versus building a vehicle part, because we don’t have a verified source for those numbers and won’t publish a guess dressed up as one. If you’ve logged your own XP gain per action type, the ratio between your numbers and this model’s curve is the more useful comparison than either alone.
