2. Five wedge lines, lowest confirmed loft

The lowest confirmed loft in each wedge line checked here: 44 degrees, 46 degrees, 46 degrees, 48 degrees, and 48 degrees, across five different manufacturers.
Overlay these against PW lofts and an interesting pattern appears. The 44-degree PW and the 44-degree wedge-line minimum land on exactly the same number — full overlap, zero gap. The 47-degree PW and the 44-degree wedge-line minimum, by contrast, leave a 3-degree gap. Depending on which iron and which wedge line you pair, the gap can close entirely or stay open.
Pair a 48-degree wedge minimum with a 47-degree PW and the wedge loft is actually slightly higher than the PW — no reversal, but only a 1-degree gap. Pair a 46-degree PW with that same 48-degree wedge minimum and the gap opens to 2 degrees. Even without matching brands, gaps this varied show up in practice. The most reliable way to check is to measure your own set’s actual PW loft against your actual wedge loft in a shop.
3. Why “4-degree gap” isn’t used here
You may have run into golf-community advice that a 4-degree gap between the PW and the next club is the rule to follow. Across the official material from five major wedge and iron brands checked here, no such recommended-gap figure turned up anywhere.
So this piece doesn’t assert a number as correct. Instead it lays the actual confirmed loft values side by side, so you can see for yourself whether your PW and your wedge minimum overlap or leave a gap. What can be inferred from the confirmed facts: an overlap can mean a redundant club, and a wide gap can mean a distance with nothing to cover it.
